"Edie dresses for the occasion," says Adair, and truer words were never spoken, "Edie's character will say, "I'm gonna wash my car and I'm gonna make sure everyone is watching wash my car, so what's a great outfit to get wet in?" Or she'll say, "I'm going to go and sell a house. And I still need to feel body-concious. I have to wear a blazer, but how many buttons do I have undone, and how short is the skirt, and how do I walk in it?" She's driven by the occasion and who's watching her on that particular occasion."
Of course, we have rarely seen Edie covered up-nearly every outfit she wears shows off her ample bosom and never-ending legs. As Nicollette Sheridan puts it, "Edie always dresses to get male attention. I think it makes her feel good about herself. I'm the opposite."
Adair's favourite items are the little black funeral dress that Edie wears when she buries Mrs. Huber's ashes, and the now-notorious short shorts she wore while washing her car. Sheridan went out and bought that outfit herself. "They wanted something sexy, but I wanted something sexy that looked normal. So it was just a pair of Abercrombie and Fitch shorts and a cheap little white cotton shirt, but there was an expensive Bra made by Agent Provocateur underneath."
The extreme costumes help Sheridan inhabit her role and find the visual comedy in her work. "There's a bit of physical comedy in that scene where I was washing the car. I was scrubbing with my hand one way and swinging my butt the other way."
Though it's easy to make jokes about Edie's revealing costumes, Sheridan points out that there is one outfit that she has never worn on the shoow: lingerie. "Edie's never even been seen in her underwear. She's never even had a love scene in the show. All the other trollops have, but she hasn't!"
