When Adair shops for Gabrielle, she tends to keep in mind both Gabrielle’s present life-a housewife in the suburbs-and her past life, as a hot runway model. “When I go out shopping for Gabrielle,” says Adair, “I look for urban chic, because she’s had that life in New York. So even if she’s moved to the suburbs and is living with Carlos, I try to come at it from that perspective.”
Unlike the other housewives, Gabrielle dresses up for almost every activity-even to go shopping. She likes being noticed and likes dressing provocatively. “So her colours are often just a little bit hotter and brighter than everyone else’s,” says Adair. “We use a lot of pink on the show, and if Gabrielle is wearing pink, it is always very hot pink, or bubblegum or extremely fuchsia.”
But what tends to garner more attention than Gabrielle’s clothes is her lack of them. Since she has had so many love scenes-both with John and Carlos-she is often in little more than a teddy, or a bra and panties. Her lingerie is a mix of Victoria’s Secret, Elle MacPherson, Betsey Johnson, and high-end designers like La Perla and Cosabelle. “She has worn lingerie from just about every designer out there. Just as we think we’ve found every one, there’s another one that comes up that we get really excited about.”
“I didn’t know how much lingerie I was going to wear,” say Eva Longoria. “I knew Gabrielle would have an affair, but I didn’t know she’d be in lingerie all the time. So I had to hire a personal trainer. But I think on the show it’s merited. She’s definitely using her sexuality as a tool and as a weapon. And what I like about our show is that the clothes are not a character as they were on Sex and the City. I like that they’re still secondary to who we are and how we play things. So I don’t really focus so much on the clothes-other than that Gabrielle is always inappropriately dresses.”
