John the gardener's mother first suspects John of having an affair with Susan, but when Gabrielle confesses the truth to her she vows revenge. She chooses not to blackmail her for money (a good idea since the Solises don't have any), but tries to get Gabrielle to talkto John out of his plan to open a gardening business instead of attending college. Gabrielle tries but it doesn't work. John is too in love with her to listen so instead, he proposes.
