The first thing to notice about teenaged gardener John Rowland were his pectoral muscles, but over the course of Season one he has revealed himself to be deeper than that; a surprisingly romantic foil to the emotionally detached Gabrielle. This idealistic young man picks her a perfect rose. tells her he loves her, even buys her an engagement ring and asks her to marry him. His affection and openness makes Gabrielle all the more aware of what is missing in her marriage.
Despite her ocassionally callous nature, her adultery, and her materialism, John sees something in Gabrielle that is beautiful and worthy of love. It is this love that keeps him chasing her, even after his parents try to break them apart.
John doesn't believe his feelings are youthful obsession; he thinks he sees into her soul. It is John's inner sweetness, his purity at heart, as much as those muscles that keep us eagerly awaiting his scenes. With Gabrielle pregnant and Carlos in jail, the young lovers will undoubtedly have much more to say to each other.
