Susan's ex-husband and Julie's father, Karl is the ex we love to hate. He left Susan for his secretary, Brandi, who looks like she's Julie's age, and doesn't even have the courage to apologize to Susan for hurting her. Later, at Julie's birthday party, Edie lets it slip that he felt up Edie Britt at a holiday party. Worse, he has the nerve to ask Susan to take him back. Luckily for her, she has the wherewithal to say no.

Marc Cherry: Karl was a little hard to cast, because we wanted a guy that was nice looking and seemed like he would be married to Teri, but was also someone you wouldn't like. When Richard Burgi came in we thought he was just terrific. Another actor played Karl in the pilot but the conception of the part changed a little bit, and we just felt at the end of the day, we needed something a little different.
