Susan is known for being artistic and sometimes uncoordinated, and these are traits that both actress Teri Hatcher and costume designer Catherine Adair try to reflect in her clothes. "Susan is a single mom" says Adair, "and an artist, and Marc's written that she tends to be a little klutzy. So when we thought about the clothes, Teri and I sat down and went to an artistic base. We go for the feeling that she's fallen in love with a belt fro a swap meet that she wears with a T-shirt that's three years old and a hot new pair of pants that she just bought before she picked her daughter up from school. I wanted a feeling of mix-and-match, just a little eccentric, but not so kooky that you'd look at the clothes instead of watching the character."
In keeping with her character, we often see Susan in thermal-style shirts, corduroy pants, or jeans, or layered tops, with eye-catching jewelery. But Susan has another mode too-when she's dressed up for special occasions-and it is these scenes that Adair gets to show of Teri Hatcher's figure, and her great sense of comedy. "Teris' physical comedy is so good and you so want to play with it. Teri can take a short skirt and make it even shorter. She knows how to move and work it. " Hence, the charity fashion-show scene, in which Susan stumbled onto the catwalk dressed in almost nothing, and the valentine's day scene, in which her dress was so high it was almost "Happy Valentine's" to everybody.
Though Adair tries to give Susan an inner sense of style, when she finds an outfit that looks too good on Hatcher, she tends to change it. 'The fun with Teri is we'll put an outfit together and then we'll both look and say, "Mmm, it's a little too together. What can we do to put it into a little bit of disarray? How do you twist it a little bit?' "
